Located in the east of Mazandaran province , Behshahr is limited northward by the Caspian Sea, southward by the Alborz mountain range and Semnan province,eastward bay Golestan province and westward by Neka city.Behshahr is located between 53 48َ and 53 36َ eastearn longitudes and 36 45َ and 36 42َnorthern latitudes.

Bahshahr consists of 3 towns: Bahshahr , Rostam-Kola and Galloogah , and 3 district :Central Galloogah and Yaneh- sar . Its southern part is mountainous and the plains lie in its northern part . The mountain area has a cold and temperate climate . The plains have house of their fertile terraced soil.

The plain of Behshahar consists of The eastern parts.The westernmost part of the plain is the plain is the continuation of the conical alluvial autcrops of Neka river and , together whit Its delta areas ,has constituted the dwelling area of earlier human groups . The northern and northeastern parts of the plain are extensions of the bay of Miankaleh and ,owing to thire shallow lands and the advancing sea , have a salty soil which have made them unsuitable for settlement in the past .

Such conditions have affected the formation of rural settlements in the cours of the Islamic period , particulary in the contemporary era.Thus , the population density and distribution of these villages today conforms whit those villages today conforms whit those of past millennia.

Historical Background :

Archaeological surveys indicate that Behshahr was one of the most important areas of civililization .Excavations have shown that the cave of Ali-Tappeh , located east of Behashahr , near the Altappeh village , and those of Hooto and Kamarband were the most ancient dwellings of human beings in this area behshahr enjoys an importanthistorical background , whose caves, ancient hills ( dating back to the pre-historic, historic and Islamic periods), strongcastles ,tomb towers , magnificent palaces , old water cisterns ,bridages , baths and beautiful homes attract people governors and monarchs.According to chronicles , the city of Behshahr was successively called khargooran and Ashraf .The Safavid monarchs , specically Shah Abbas , paid attention to this city , because of its geographical features, plains and lush mountains. It was enlarged by buildung a palace, an observatory , a garden ,a bath and a caravansary in it.

According to chronicles , the city was successively called Kabbod-jameh , Panjah-Hazar , Kolbad and Khargooran . the first Safavid monarch , Shah Abbas , has buildings and magnificent gardens built in this city , which he named Ashraf . It was highly praised by tourists in the last years .

Abbas abad Dam:
Registration No : 745

Built by shah Abbas , the first Safavid monarch , it is located in a lush forest 9km southeast of Behshahr . It is 50 meters long , 7 meters wide and 20 meters high . A squaredomed brick construction stands amid its lake . The relics remaining near the dam are two brick towers , ruined castles , stone ramparts , a cobblestone-paved road and some cups .

Bagh-e shah:

Built upon the other of the Safavid monarch , Shah Abbas , it is located in the center of Behshahr . Having several hundred years old cypress trees , stone-paved streams and small basins , it is one of the tourist attrac-tions of Mazandaran province .
